What Is Eating Disorders Bulimia About
By: Kerris Samson

Although anorexia is now the most widely recognized of all the eating disorders by medical professionals. The fact that a person who suffers from bulimia should have not their condition dismissed as being a much less serious problem. In fact the health problems associated with the eating disorders bulimia can be just destructive on a person as those associated with anorexia.

In a very few cases those suffering from bulimia (known as bulimics) will restrict their food intake. Rather in the majority of cases where a person is diagnosed as suffering from this eating disorder what they prefer to do is actually try to remove the food that they have consumed.

But bulimia should not be mistaken for binge eating. Rather what a bulimic person prefers to do is eat food as they would normally and then attempt to get rid of it. They will either induce themselves to vomit or they will use laxatives.

The biggest problem faced both by those close to a sufferer of a bulimia or by a medical professional is actually recognizing that they have the condition in the first case. With anorexia and binge eating people will see that the person's weight changes dramatically. But with bulimia there may be no difference in their weight, although for some they may be overweight.

As mentioned previously with all eating disorders there are serious repercussions to that person's health when they suffer from them. If a bulimic person is one who chooses to vomit in order to expel the food that they have eaten this can place some considerable amount of strain on to their heart.

The other major problem with self-induced vomiting and the taking of laxatives to purge the body of these foods is that the person is not getting sufficient amounts of nutrients into it. It is these nutrients which actually help with the body to function properly especially in relation to all major organs and other systems within the body. If a person is for bulimic for any length of time this can turn into a life threatening situation.

As with all forms of eating disorders as well as trying to get the sufferer to eat a much more healthy diet, underlying psychological problems will need to be treated as well. The problem is that for those people who are diagnosed with suffering from anorexia nervosa are also at a greater risk of developing bulimia as well. So through the treatment of the psychological problems associated with these disorders can often help to prevent the conditions from becoming far worse.

Therefore, in a large number of cases people who know the person will see that they are actually eating will consider that this person does not have a problem any more. But this is just not the case and it is far better if these people understand that this is another completely different problem and the only way the eating disorders bulimia can be treated is through the help of a professional.
