What Are Corporate Coaches?
By: George Purdy

Within any company, the king or queen of the castle is the company’s chief executive officer. This is the position whose occupant must oversee everything: major decisions, all the divisions of the enterprise, expenses and revenues, and ultimately profit and loss. Most CEOs are confident in their abilities, and they need to be, because they hold final responsibility for everything.

Chief executive officer coaching is essential during these times when the business world is continuously changing. Current newspapers are full of stories about CEOs who have lost their jobs because of poor performance by their companies and the media excels at making even smart CEOs appear dumb. Executive officer coaching can help CEOs sidestep such problems and retain good company performance and their own positions .

CEO coaching is not the same as management coaching. The coach who is supposed to undertake chief executive training must himself have thorough knowledge of the business world. Not only this but he should be aware of that company’s organization and work culture. Conducting chief executive coaching is a very challenging task. It helps the CEO to excel not only in his professional life but also in his personal life.

The most important thing when it comes to chief executive coaching is choosing the right place. It needs to be a private area free of the hustle and bustle of daily distractions. It can still be in a CEO’s office, but the most effective sessions will be achieved if you can eliminate the many hectic elements of work during the planned time. This way, the coach and CEO will have the best opportunity to work together without interruption.

In many ways, CEO coaching is a lot like corporate executive board coaching. Both include team-building exercises, each member working together to build a kind of synergy with each other. Remember that each member is accustomed to being the top dog in his home corporation, so grouping them all together may initially cause some butting heads on business approaches and so forth. Nevertheless, when coaching board members it is essential to have focused conversations about how their respective businesses are doing.

Chief executive coaching is an involved yet fruitful course of action that can improve the overall performance of the CEO. For example, a CEO might be coached to look directly at people so they won’t shy away and to avoid being perceived as apathetic and not paying attention to their concerns. If a CEO was consistently getting stuck in the decision making process, he or she would then be coached on how to use a decision tree to avoid losing important revenue opportunities.

Most CEOs are the ultimate authorities within their companies, and are highly confident in their abilities. Chief executive officer coaching is somewhat different from other management coaching, because the coach must know the specific company and the overall business world well. Chief executive coaching must be uninterrupted and private to have maximum effectiveness. Corporate executive board coaching is similar to coaching a CEO, with the additional team building component to deal with the members’ individual histories. There are many reasons a CEO may need coaching, and it should leave the CEO better able to do his job.
