The ancient Greeks were the first to chew gum. It was a popular past time for them. Other cultures chew substances made from grasses, plants and resins, instead. On December 28, 1869, William Semple patented the art of chewing gum for the first time in history, but it is Susan Montgomery Williams who blew the largest bubble gum at 23 inches in diameter, as documented in the Guinness World Record.
Major brands such as Bubble Yum and Bubbicilious are not necessarily the best ones for blowing bubbles. They are usually too soft and too flavorful, meant for those who chew gum for leisure. They are be easy to chew and to last longer. On the other hand, unpopular brands such as Double Bubble or Bazooka are great for those who want to blow impressive bubble size. Since they contain less sugar, they tend to be harder to chew but create more durable bubbles.
The trick is to use a small amount of gum. If after you have blown your bubble and still find gum in your mouth, it does not mean you need more gum. Just more practice. More gum does not make more bubble. Also, you can only use three pieces of gum to contest the world record.
Pay close attention to your wind and temperature. These are two factors that will cause your bubble blowing to pop before they reach full potential. Be sure to blow your bubbles inside where you can control the wind and the temperature. Too cold and your bubble pops prematurely, too warm and your bubble will sag and go flat.
All gum contains sugar and artificial flavoring which is great for taste, but bad for bubbles. Be sure to chew your gum long enough to work out all of the sugar and artificial flavoring, this will help to strengthen your bubble. Be sure to get your gum to the correct consistency. As you blow bubbles, the gum cools and becomes less pliable, as you chew it warms back up. Find the right consistency to where you can push your tongue through the gum to make the pocket, but where you don’t push all the way through and leave little gum to make a big bubble with.
It is important to blow your bubble slowly if you want to achieve best results. Slow even breaths are essential for your gum to not only stretch and grow, but also maintain the pressure at a constant rate. Try to keep your mouth relaxed and open so that you can fill your bubble with more air. Avoid clenching your mouth as if you are sucking on something. That would make you blow too hard and put your bubble in jeopardy.
Practice makes perfect. Nevertheless, a strong jaw, tongue and diaphragm are also necessary to blow championship bubbles. Practice and play with your friends using the tips given above. Eventually you will find the right combination and perfect conditions for you to make the biggest bubble. While having a go at blowing bubbles, do not forget to have fun! |
