Stained Glass Heritage

There are many stained glass windows and objects that are part of the World's heritage.

Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in England. It is also home of one of the most popular stained glass windows - The story of the Magi. Another popular stained glass piece is a 12th century window as well as The Poor Man's Bible window. In fact the whole cathedral is part of the art heritage as it features unique architecture and a lot of great stained glass works.

La Sainte-Chapelle in France amazes with its huge stained glass windows. Their origin dates from the 15th century. The most famous one is the rose window.

There are more unique examples of glass artworks throughout Europe. The Speyer Cathedral and the Augsburg Cathedral in Germany, Les Andelys, Ghent Cathedral in Belgium. Most of them date from 12th to 15th centuries.

There are some examples of great stained glass works from the 17th century. One of the leading manufacturers of stained glass of that time is the English company Hardman & Co. one of their popular works are The Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, The Gothic elegance of John Hardman Powell, The East Window of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, The East Window of St. Nicholas, Bradfield.

During the 20th century stained glass production continued to develop. Many windows were created and they are surely destined to become part of the World's art heritage. One of the examples of 20th century stained glass are: a window in the Buckfast Abbey, England, Franciscan Church, Kraków, Christinae Church, Sweden. Not all of the great glass designs are dedicated to old times. There are modern designs too such as the Secular glass in the Montreal metro, Canada.

Stained glass was not only used for window production. There are historical objects made of stained glass and some of them date back to 100 BC. Definitely the most famous stained glass object considered art heritage are the Tiffany lamps.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American best known for his stained glass lamps. There are many examples of his works and many people are collectors of antique Tiffany lamps. He has also worked in window stained glass production and his works can be seen in the Lightner Museum in Florida.

There are much more amazing stained glass works that worth seeing. The best way to find out more about them is to browse the internet or get a book about stained glass history.
