The world may be suffering from a shortage of wheat, water and other natural resources needed for its survival, but it certainly is not in want of companies that offer the friendly services of “Toronto escorts”, “wild college girls” and other commercial sex workers. Consider these figures published by the NGO ProCon.org for example:
· In the United States, at least 1 million women have worked as a prostitute as of 2007.
· In sub-Saharan Africa, the number of female prostitutes ranges from 0.4 to 4.3% of the female population aged 15-49.
· In Asia, the prostitutes are about 0.2% to 2.6% of the population
· 0.4% to 1.4% of women in Eastern Europe engage in prostitution
· 0.1% to 1.4% of the female population in Western Europe engage in the flesh trade
Taking into consideration how rampant prostitution is throughout the globe and how there seems to be no feasible solution to ending it, different groups in countries have started calling for its legalization. They point out various reasons to support their call.
Legalizing prostitution, they say, would allow the government to regulate the trade and establish clear rules and guidelines about their rates/salaries. When sex workers are organized, the government can get accurate information about their industry and provide them with better programs for their benefit and protection. A government for example, can require sex workers to regularly undergo HIV-testing or attend seminars on preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases before they are issued work permits.
When commercial sex is decriminalized, sex workers gain the freedom to operate independently; they can break free from the clutches of pimps and criminal gangs who abuse, exploit and make money off them while promising them “protection” from the police.
Groups who call for the legalization of prostitution also say that allowing sex workers to offer their services openly can result to a decrease in prostitution-related crimes like robbery and physical-abuse. A prostitute who has been maltreated by a client, for example, can now approach the authorities for assistance without fear of being arrested herself.
While protecting sex workers, legalizing abortion can also benefit those who patronize their services. Because the government keeps tabs and monitors those who work as prostitutes for example, clients are protected from unscrupulous individuals who may want to take advantage of them. When the government introduces optimized health-safety measures for sex workers, then they also protect the clients from contracting diseases as a result of having sexual relations with the prostitutes.
Replying to all these assertions made by pro-legalization groups, those who vehemently oppose decriminalizing the profession on the other hand claim that doing so would do more harm than good. First, it will encourage more women, including impressionable young girls, to engage in prostitution. Legalizing it is tantamount to sending out a message saying engaging in the profession is perfectly acceptable.
Second, authorizing the practice of the profession only masks and not solves the problem of women’s exploitation. Some may argue that this will allow women to operate in the trade free supervised by the government and not by exploitative pimps, but what they seem to forget is that, working independently or not, these women are never engaged in the flesh trade voluntarily. As what a sex worker answered when asked by representatives from Christian group Platform Of Organizations Who Shelter (Ex)Prostitutes if she works as a prostitute voluntarily, “I estimate that 8 out of 10 women who work here are not voluntarily in prostitution”. It could be for financial or emotional reasons, but no one is a sex worker because she wants to be one.
