You have heard it said that "sex sells". In magazines, movies and on
television, we are bombarded with images that are there to suggest that
a particular product or service is somehow linked to being younger,
stronger, healthier, and happier. Sex is often used as the trigger to
capture your attention long enough for the advertiser to make their
pitch.
Why does the word "mom" evoke such a strong emotional response?
Obviously we have all had a mother, but more than that the word mom
brings feelings of love, protection, safety, warmth, nurturing, food,
comfort, happiness, laughter, etc.
This is why this word is so powerful. We are involved on an emotional
rather than intellectual level.
To be a successful businessman or woman, you have to use words that
grab the attention of your customers and force them to take the desired
action your web page was designed for. They must decide to buy or not
buy, join or not join, read the newsletter or not. You must take the
customer by the hand a gently lead them to your desired destination.
The first step in this process is to get the attention of the customer.
Lets say your business is selling fish. Your headline could read,
"Fish For Sale", however something like, "Fresh, Mouthwatering, Tuna
Now Available" might work better. Why? You have now given the customer
more information: not only are you selling fish but, it is fresh, moist
and happens to be tuna. By using the word "now" you suggest that this
high quality product has just been made available.
Another way to grab A T T E N T I O N is by using blank spaces in key
words. You might want to combine the use of blank spaces with words
that requires an action like "S T O P" or "W A I T". Other action
words include hurry, look, think, come, take, ignore, see, open, click,
sign, buy, order, shop, pick up, etc. I am sure you can think of many
more.
The second thing you must do is to state the benefits of your product
in the strongest way possible. Again, try to get the customer
emotionally as well as intellectually involved. If you were selling a
new time saving software program, you might say something like: "Would
you like to spend more time on the golf course? Take a longer lunch?
Get home to the family quicker? If your answer is "yes", then you need
to try out this amazing product. It is so fast that before you know it
your job will be completed and you will have your putter in hand."
You get the idea. If your claim is truthful, then by all means get
your customer involved emotionally. Sell an experience rather than
just a product.
Another powerful tool that will increase your sales is the use of
testimonials. It is human nature to want the same things others have,
especially if we respect or admire that person. Lets face it, do you
think that Hanes underwear is made any better, or is made of superior
cotton? No, Hanes has increased sales because Michael Jordan is their
spokesperson. If you know a celebrity who has used your product, then
their endorsement or testimonial would be of great value. Don't know
anyone? This shouldn't stop you from using testimonials. We all like
to see other people just like us being successful. Why do you think
American Idol is such a popular TV series? We are happy to see that
someone who was unknown can work hard and become successful and famous.
If they can do it so can we. Ask your customers for their comments
both good and bad. You now have the chance to not only improve the
product you sell, but their testimonial will go a long way in
convincing others to buy it too.
The last technique in the use of key words is the use of questions. We
have been trained all our lives to answer questions. Use this to your
advantage. Here are some examples of questions that evoke a response:
"Do you have enough money?" "Would you like to eat and not get fat?"
"Would you like to sign up today?"; "Why not try this today? "Do you
really want to pass this up?"; "What is more time with your family
really worth?"; Why should you be left out?"; "What is peace of mind
worth?". Now is the time for you to use your imagination and
creativity. You do want to be successful, don't you?
