By: Tony Begg

It seems like there are two different types of people in the world. The ones that are driven and seem to be bound by all the rules. And the ones that are carefree that just seem to take life as it comes. You've probably noticed that the driven ones aren't always successful or happy for that matter. What do you think setting goals has to do with it all?

Do you have what it takes to be successful? Are you willing to do what it takes to be successful or would you rather make excuses? The answer to that question has everything to do with how good you will be at setting goals.

So what happens when go about setting goals? Basically they represent your thoughts about what you want to achieve or be in the future. To be achievable goals should be realistic.

Realistic goals allow you to put them into practice or at least do some activities that allow you to monitor your progress. However, more is involved than just merely setting realistic goals. If all you anyone had to do to be successful was simply setting goals everyone would win the lotto.

The key to achieving your goals is acting as if you have already achieved them. In other words you must act the way you goals dictate. Just setting goals isn't enough because if you are not willing to do the work necessary to reach your goal than you might as well stop before you even start.

1. Increase your chances for success with setting goals by having milestones to measure your progress towards your goal. Be precise with your milestones and you will find it much easier to reach success.

2. Think through your options and don't be afraid to take risk when setting goals. Taking the time to think through your options will help you plan you day according to what will help you reach you goal. Considerable roadblocks and the way around them as part of setting goals.

3. Be the person your goals say you are. The way you think of yourself will determine how you act. So make up your mind that you will succeed and don't hesitate to try new things. It's okay to be uncomfortable because that means you are doing something new. To get where you want to be you will have to do new things which is one of the reasons for setting goals.

Setting goals isn't just for the unsuccessful. Everyone benefits when they take the time to put a plan in place and then the take steps to work towards that plan. Successful people will be highly successful if up till now they have just enjoyed natural success and have never before taken the time to plan it.

When you are setting goals you need to take an honest personal inventory or your asset and liabilities. Plus you have to decide for yourself if you're willing to be successful. This is true for both business and personal goals alike.

Keep in mind that there are goals that are so big you simply can't do them alone so be sure to get help when you need it. You may a times find yourself wanting to give up because it just seems like things aren't working. Remember your commitment to making it was part of the setting goals process and never give up.

For the really hard goals that you've set for yourself sometimes you may feel like quitting. Take the time to think through who you know that would be supportive and could help you work through your challenges so that you can still achieve you goal. Brainstorm together for solutions you may not have thought of when you were setting your goals to begin with.

Never forget that setting goals is for your benefit. Keep at it and be sure to stay focused on the goal. Most of the time concentrating on one or two goals is more productive than a bunch of them at once will be. Make sure you have a clear idea of what achieving you goal look like and see yourself as having already reached them. For example if you want a particular car then you should see yourself already driving that car.

If you are aiming for a personal or educational goal, make things happen by planning and doing things related to your goals. You will then realize that setting goals, no matter how difficult they may appear, greatly increases your chances of achieving them. Once your goals are achieved, sweet success knocks on your door commending you for a job well done.
