Sales Techniques: Are You Accidentally Successful?
By: Cheryl A. Clausen

Are those top performers just lucky? Haven't you ever thought to yourself that salesperson sure is lucky? To you it just seems like they can't help but tripping into more business than you can beat the bushes tracking down each day. In reality top performers aren't lucky, but they sure know how to set up systems that produce their luck. You don't accidentally stumble into long-term sales success you develop systems that produce long-term sales success.

Top performers are intentionally successful and you can be too. By definition luck is good fortune that seems to happen by chance. Luck happens when you're able to recognize the opportunities around you. There are three habits that you can develop that will help you to become intentionally success.

Develop the habit of searching for opportunities in everything you experience. When something good happens to you that seems to have happened by chance realize there are many more opportunities waiting for you if you just start looking for them. Leverage the opportunity by identifying ways to expand on the opportunity. Leverage the opportunity by identifying ways to make this opportunity repeatable. Most opportunities don't need to be one-time events. Identify what you need to do to make this current one time opportunity a regular event.

The second habit you want to develop is the habit of planning how to turn one-time opportunities into frequent opportunities. You may need to do some research, but that's what gives successful sales people a competitive advantage over the average sales person. It takes hard work to make selling so easy it looks like you're lucky. Discover how the opportunity came to be and how you can reproduce it.

Where there is one opportunity there are others and its your job to find those other opportunities. It's your job to reach out and make the connections that will bring those opportunities to you. When you're able to regularly bring about your own opportunities you can turn those plans into a system that consistently and predictably produces the outcomes you want. You have a system to grow your business the way you want.

Develop the habit of working your plan. You may have developed plans previously and then given up on them and thrown them out. Don't do that. When you have a plan for generating more great opportunities don't give up on your plan just because it's hard. Success in sales demands hard work.

No one achieves success without taking action. Make a commitment to acting on your plan. As you take action you will discover that you need to make adaptations and corrections, but that's ok. Because each adaptation and correction is taking you closer to the opportunities you want. You may not get it right the first time and every time, but you'll get things right more often the more action you take. The actions you take are creating the luck you want.
