Named after a 17th century French explorer, Cadillac started out as a new car manufacturer when the Henry Ford Company was dissolved. William Murphy and Lemuel Brown were persuaded by engineer Henry M. Leeland to continue producing automobiles using Leeland’s 1-cylinder engine.
