One of the most important things that you can do for yourself in life is to learn new skills. Whether you decide to learn to paint, maybe pick up a musical instrument or another creative pursuit - these things can broaden your horizons. One thing that can really help you out is learning to cook.
Cooking is definitely not just a practical skill, although we do tend to use some aspect of it everyday. It's also something artistic, a hobby, something to learn and cultivate as a genuine art form within ourselves. You've probably already learned some basic skills by just watching others in the kitchen.
There are several different ways to learn how to cook, and each of them has their benefits. Cooking classes can be a great way to learn complicated techniques such as pastry making and specific regional cuisine, but they can also be costly and you need to dedicate a lot of time to the class.
You can also learn by watching television programs. These shows, which can be seen on cable networks or on DVDs or videos can be very helpful when trying to master basic techniques that are hard to envision without seeing them performed, such as chopping and mixing.
Nothing, however, beats a good book for teaching most people how to cook. Books have been the mainstay of teaching cooking for many generations. Paging through books that explain different techniques and ingredients was the way that your mom and your mom's mom learned to cook.
Learn to cook through books by looking through a lot of books, either at a library or bookstore. Buy a few basic cookbooks that you like best, and keep them in your cookbook library. Read through the recipes as well as the instructional parts of the cookbooks to get a feel for the writing.
Choose books from reputable sources. Cookbooks written by recognizable names, such as chefs and cooks that have been around for ages are a better bet than more contemporary cooks. The Joy of Cooking is a book that all new cooks should have, and it has been around for 50 years.
Reading to learn how to cook might not seem like the easiest way, but if it's worked for generations it can work for you too. Combine your reading with a lot of practice, and look into schooling from other sources like classes and shows, and you'll earn to cook quickly and well. |
