Learn the Steps to Become an Elementary Teacher

When looking for the steps to become an elementary teacher, perhaps the biggest step is determining if you have the drive and determination to teach young students. Many people think it is important to be able to influence the way youngsters will turn out, but there must be that willingness to teach first and foremost. Additionally the following points will guide you about some of the other steps to become an elementary school teacher.

For teaching elementary school, a teacher should have a well-rounded education themselves. Not only are the basic classes of English, science, history and math important but developing a knowledge of music, art, literature, and beyond are most helpful in your role. Think of yourself as being a conveyor of general knowledge to the young students in your care. How can you do so if you do not have the general knowledge to convey?

Another step that could help with your mission to become an elementary school teacher is to go ahead and get some experience working with children. What you are doing is deciding from practical experiences that you really do want to work with elementary age kids. You could try contacting the local elementary school near where you live or even the local school district to see if there is some kind of voluntary work you could do within a school working with children. If that doesn't work out, or your schedule does not presently allow, contact the local Parks and Recreation department to see what type of after school or summertime activities need volunteers to help with children.

An important part of becoming an elementary school teacher is to gain some work experience. Therefore you actually need to spend some time in a classroom environment working alongside those children you are hoping to teach in the future. Most courses that allow you to gain certification as an elementary school teacher will provide you with the chance to gain work experience. There are some colleges and universities that, in order for a person to be apply to take up their courses, you will need to have gained at least 80 hours of work experience working with elementary school children.

Of course, in most places you will have to have an elementary education degree to work as a teacher, though not always a necessity. Look for an accredited college or university that offers the elementary education bachelor's degree. If that is not available at a nearby school, you may find that they offer a graduate level degree in elementary education instead. A graduate program may also be best if you already have a degree in another topic.

Learning more about the particulars of getting your elementary education degree, if you have decided to go ahead with it, should start with an online search. Not only can you learn the about the degree and courses and other details of the college you select, it can help you narrow down your college choices. In addition, you can do a search for information regarding the credentials and other matters needed to teach in the state or area you want to teach in after graduating.

Lastly, with degree in hand or whatever credentials your state requires, you will most likely want to or have to join one of the professional teachers' associations. Most likely that will be either the National Education Association (NEA) or the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
