The first thing you need to decide if you want to get out of debt, is not whether you need a written plan or not; that part is pretty much a given. You will not get very far without that piece of the puzzle in place. The very first thing you need to determine is your level of motivation.

Your level of motivation easily lays the groundwork for your entire plan. Do you have what it takes to become debt-free (everything but your home) in just 24 months? How about 18, 15 or even 12 months?

Your level of motivation will determine how long it takes you to become debt-free. I have seen many people fail over the years without a written plan. Likewise, if you do not determine your level of motivation when setting up your plan, you will likely end up in a similar situation.

Are you mad? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Are you willing to do anything and at all costs to eradicate debt in your life very quickly? Are you willing to work overtime, extra jobs and to sell some things? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may be able to get out of debt in 24 months or even 12. Factor your emotions into your plan.

While working through your plan, your motivation level may change. It is important to know that this is not a failure. Simply regroup and recalculate the time needed to reach your goals.
