Business Process Improvement - What Is It Really About?
By: Robert Pierre

What is important to business owners is the bottom line - profitability. They make sure that they obtain this by concentrating on satisfying their customers and by achieving end business objectives.

Business processes help ensure that these goals are achieved in a seamless manner. Good and effective business processes are necessary in helping the organization become more productive while maintaining quality standards. Business processes ensure a business' success. However, since the business environment is fraught with changes, the organization should also learn how to adapt to these changes. This is where a good set of business improvement strategies become necessary.

Is Business Process Improvement for existing processes only?

Conceptually, yes. A business process improvement can be carried out when data measurement techniques and data variables already exist for a process which is only possible for existing processes. Ideally this process must start with a process mapping or a business process mapping procedure where different elements of the business process are studied carefully before improvement measures are implemented.

What benefits do we get from a Business Process Improvement?

As an example, let us look at Company A. It is a company that produces consumer goods to be used by its customers. The daily demand for a particular product has continually been 2,000 units a day. However, they are only able to produce 1,000 units of that product. A Business Process Improvement activity is thus necessary to help the company find ways as to how they can improve their processes so that they are able to meet the demand of 2,000 units daily.

What about ease of implementation with regards to Business Process Improvement?

A Business Process Improvement is fairly easy to implement, especially for someone who understands the businesses processes. However, it should be noted that those involved with the business process improvement should have an attitude that is open to change. For some employees, the prospect of having to change from something they are used to doing to something they have to learn is difficult to accept. That is why it is important to take the employees directly involved into confidence before such improvement measures are put into work.

Business Process Improvement uses techniques like Kaizen, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management to help professionals achieve optimal results in their business processes.

Business process improvement - It is all about team work. Effective business process improvement measures have failed because teams have not contributed to its success.
