Prior to removing any equipment that needs replacing, be sure to take digital photos of where and how the component is mounted. In addition, be sure to note how many wire are leading to and away from the unit.

Make note of the surrounding environment, including other parts that are directly connected to the unit you wish to replace. Check for any accessories that may be attached to the unit in question. Pay careful attention to any parts used for mounting as you may need to replace these as well.

Write down any writing you can find on the component. Accessories may in fact cover up valid part information for the main item you wish to replace. This is why it is so important to make note of all and any part numbers you see.

After identifying the part numbers, check for voltage markings and make note of these as well.

If possible, enlist the assistance of purchasing who may be able to provide more detailed information via an old purchasing order. You may also check for any manuals for the equipment that may be kept in the maintenance department.

Use your preferred search engine to find more about the unit in question. Most web sites will provide a photograph or diagram, making it easier for you to positively identify the item in question. If you are unable to locate any information, try different variations of the part number. For example remove spaces, insert spaces, remove and insert hyphens or try using capital letter as well.

Be sure to provide all photographs to the company assisting you with replacement parts to ensure you receive the correct replacement part. Since you will be replacing the part anyway, you may want to ask about upgrades, accessories or other products that may improve the performance and/or functionality of the machine in use.
