10 Tips to Saving Energy at Home
By: Mich Crawley

Year in year out we are all hesitant to turn on the heat for that high electric bill that will arrive at our door. We try to figure out ways to save energy and will scrutinize our lives down to every last minute detail to try and determine how to reduce our bills. We even look at other times of the year in our home. Many more people are becoming more aware of energy efficiency both at reducing global warming and protecting the natural resources of the planet. Oil is used as an energy source in some power plants, while others use natural gases. Either way we are using resources that come from the land and therefore we need to regulate how often we use them. So below are ten energy saving tips for your home no matter where you live.

Number one of the list is making sure your home is air tight. When you run the heat or air conditioner small amounts of heat or air may escape through windows that are not sealed properly. You will want to re-caulk around the windows, add more weather stripping and other construction products to your home windows and doors to eliminate the heat or air escaping. When the heat or air escapes the energy increases to keep your home comfortable because you are wasting energy cooling or heating the outdoors as well.

Avoid leaving lights on in rooms you are not in. If you are home at night then you should remember to turn off the outdoor lights. Don’t waste energy with lights that you are not using directly. If you are in one room consider making sure the lights in the rest of the house are turned off. You may even decide to watch television in the dark, especially in summer when the sun is out more. During the day you may wish to avoid using lights at all to use natural light.

Turn off and unplug items you are not using. While they are sitting there energy is being drawn to the plug and then returned.

Keep the fridge door shut. Try not to stand there with the door open looking for a snack. Determine what you want before opening the door and have the door open just long enough. When you bring groceries home combine all the fridge items and freezer items together before opening the doors to avoid opening and closing the door, which uses energy.

Avoid using the powered garage door if you have one. You can open and close it to get your car out, but avoid unnecessary openings and closings of the door. For instance if it is bin night then leave the door open when you come home and prepare the trash that gets left out before closing the door again. If you are just stopping at home briefly then use the front door rather than opening and parking in the garage.

In summer if you are going to open your windows at night when you go to sleep make sure that you have turned off the air conditioner unit at least a half hour before you go to bed. This will conserve the air you have produced using the air conditioner and then you will not waste the energy it took to produce it. Keep your heat or air conditioner at a lower setting during the day while you are away at work and turn it up when you get home. You may even consider turning it off all together during the day while you are not there to use it.

Close off rooms and vents that you are not in. This will concentrate the energy to the one room you need it in.
Buy longer lasting bulbs that are more energy efficiency for your household lights. They use far less energy and therefore at the same time help to reduce the energy bill for your home.

There are also boxes that you can buy that will recycle the unused energy in your home. These install directly on your breaker panel. This device will draw the unused energy through it and send it to where it needs to go.

There are of course many other tips in energy saving that you may already know about or are yet to be introduced to you. The idea of listing these tips is to help you realize that saving energy is beneficial to the entire population and will help reduce those energy bills during the winter and summer months when you need heat or air. We all hate to see the energy bill sky rocket because of the temperature outside. Home construction is perhaps the most important when you consider saving energy. Warmer areas tend to build with concrete because it reflects more heat and remains cooler in the warm summer. Cold places tend to use more insulation.
